Dalton State's S.M. Lee Helps United States Retain Arnold Palmer Cup

Monday, July 9, 2018

The United States claimed 18 of 24 points in the final round singles matches to pull away for a 38.5-21.5 victory at the Arnold Palmer Cup at Evian Resort Golf Club. This year's edition of Team USA is the first side to win as the visiting team since the 2010 Americans. Neither side had retained the cup since the US in 2011. The United States now leads the all-time series 12-9-1.

Northern Ireland's Olivia Mehaffey won the day's first point, but the Americans responded by winning the next three.

Chandler Phillips and Italy's Lorenzo Scalise halved the following match before Team USA ran off three more victories. The sides would record another halved match before the Internationals clamed victories by Andy Zhang and Luis Gagne.

Team USA's Emilia Migliaccio, who was the only player in this year's matches to tally a 4-0 record, led another American that included five-straight wins. Alana Uriell put the exclamation point on the run with a 2&1 victory that clinched the cup for the United States.

Olivia Mehaffey of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Collin Morikawa of La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., were named recipients of the Michael Carter Award, which is presented to the Arnold Palmer Cup participant that best represents the qualities and ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and upholding of the game.

Justin Suh of San Jose, Calif., was selected by both teams to receive the Arnold Palmer Cup exemption into the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard while Dylan Kim of Plano, Texas, was presented a wild card to The Evian Championship this September. Players selected the individual from both teams that they think best represents the "Arnold Palmer Legacy," that is, the values that Arnold Palmer exhibited through his life in golf.

S.M. Lee of Dalton State teamed with Kaitlyn Papp from the University of Texas to defeat the International squad of Ronan Mullarney and Chole Ryan 2-up in mixed four-ball action on Friday.

Lee and Papp would team up again on Saturday morning and rally from 3-down on the back 9 to halve their match with Javaree Boonchant and Fredrik Nilken.

KK Limbhasut and Alvaro Ortiz would defeat Lee and Stephen Franken 5&4 in afternoon four-ball on Saturday, but Lee would bounce back on Sunday with a 2&1 victory onver Harry Hall in singles play.

Overall, He would finish with a 2-1-1 record in the event after the three days of play.

Randy Smith: SEC Picks Week Four

There have been few surprises in the SEC through the first three weeks of the season. One of them however is Alabama. Why you might ask? Well, the Crimson Tide seems to be even better than we all thought. In fact, I don't know if any team in the country can beat them this year. For instance, this week against a top-25 Texas A&M team, 'Bama is a 28 point favorite.  Texas ... (click for more)

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous - And Response (4)

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Scream ‘Sexual Assault!’

Candace Owens, a communications director for the conservative non-profit “Turning Point,” wasted not a minute’s time as the Democratic debauchery of Supreme Court appointee Brett Kavanaugh raced like a prairie fire across America. There is little doubt that many politicians -- on either side of the aisle -- play a little loose with the truth. But this Eleventh Hour attack on the ... (click for more)
