A woman told police a man, who was apparently fleeing from a man with a kitchen knife, jumped on top of her car on Dodson Avenue and told her to keep driving. She did so - with two small children inside - until police intervened on Highway 58.

Calvin Wayne Hanks, 40, of 3800 Youngstown Road, was charged with carjacking, reckless endangerment, assault on police, resisting arrest and vandalism.

In the incident on Monday, police said they got a call that there was a white male on top of a moving black Expedition traveling north on Highway 58. The caller was the woman driving the vehicle.

The woman said the man tried to break her driver's side window with a heavy chain necklace when she tried to stop.

Police recognized Hanks, who has a lengthy criminal record and had active warrants. Once he was taken off the roof, he refused to put his hands behind his back. He struggled as he was being taken into custody and kicked a deputy.

The woman said she told the man multiple times to get off the roof. She said her path was blocked by a tan sedan about two minutes after the man climbed aboard. She said a black male who was about 50 exited the vehicle with a kitchen knife. She said he appeared to be after the man on her car.

She was able to get away from the man with the knife, but the man on the car made her keep driving. She said he forced her to run several traffic signals.

Drink Up, Chattanooga

I attended the meeting to discuss the placement of the sewage treatment plant at the Cambridge Center in Ooltewah today. Roy Exum: Dear Faux Pelini

It has been my experience that of all the tribes and herds of different people on earth, sports writers are among the funniest people of all. Oh, there isn’t anything real sexy about Villanova beating Georgetown or a baseball player hitting for the cycle. Now, if a player hits a single, double, triple and homer in that order, that’s “a natural cycle,” and that is kind of fun to ... (click for more)
